a wild sheep chase….

to borrow the title of the famous murakami haruki book, i am searching for the soul of japan through the medium of taiko.
as many people may know, i am a family man. i believe that my daughter is my heart. the rhythm is that of a japanese drum. much like poe’s poem about the different types of bells, there are different types of taiko. big, medium, and small. much like the poem and its symbol of different stages of one’s life, the taiko seems to “ring” different patterns and sounds all at once within me.
i am searching the history of taiko at the same time studying japanese history. it is quite difficult. there are many viewpoints of it. so, i became stressed…
i talked to my sister-in-law’s husband. we had a long conversation of my desire to find an english book on taiko. we started by talking about historical japanese events….which led to my desire to find a good book. I WOULD LIKE TO HIRE SOMEONE TO WRITE FURIGANA FOR THE BOOK I HAVE. however, there is no such person because we all have our daily lives to attend to.
i talked about how i would like to possibly create my own book, specifically in the manga genre much like “boys be volume 1” in which the story begins with a boy who is practicing for a tournament but has a serious accident. so, in the effort to transition to not such a serious conversation, it was decided that i would try to take as many pictures from as many different camera angles as possible (all from the narration of a foreigner. who could it be?:) much like human drama it will focus on different parts of the daily scenarios he participates in and the things he learns along the way.
in this way i achieve 3 purposes: 1) i get to use a medium i am familiar with aka behind the camera, 2) i can continue to enjoy and relax in japan, and 3) learn MANY MANY different things about japanese culture and history….to create a 心からの太鼓 (taiko from the heart). よろしくね。今からもマイドハーピー (please look upon me favorably. from now, also, in every way, be happy:)

About charleswinstead

having lived in japan for 3.5 years i wish to "go back to the island" as often as i can. i lived from 1999-2003. i went back in 2007, then again in 2011. i am a full time teacher, so the best time to go for me is during the summer vacation. it works out well because i love the sensational feelings i get in japan during the summer...especially playing taiko and eating lots of ma-cha ice.

The manga idea is great Charles! I’ll ask around and try and find a budding artist amongst my students. J
